Статистически известно, что частота рождений мальчиков больше при первых родах и снижается при последующих. Чем моложе будущие родители, тем больше у них шансов зачать мальчика, и наоборот. Сперматозоиды, несущие Х- и Y-хромосому, отличаются по своим свойствам. Y-сперматозоиды более мелкие, легкие и подвижные, но менее живучие, чем Х-сперматозоиды. На основании этого возникли теории, утверждающие, что при половых контактах, происходящих задолго до овуляции, менее долговечные Y-сперматозоиды погибают и яйцеклетка с большей долей вероятности оплодотворится Х-сперматозоидом, то есть родится девочка.
Если половой контакт непосредственно предшествует овуляции или происходит сразу после нее, то, скорее всего, родится мальчик, так как более подвижные и быстрые Y-сперматозоиды быстрее "добегут" до вышедшей яйцеклетки. Эти выводы подтверждаются данными многих исследователей.
Но для сперматозоидов существует определенный лимит времени. Надо успеть достичь цели за 24-48 часов. Это время жизни яйцеклетки. Тем, кто не успел, придется ждать следующего цикла. Ученые объясняют механизм метода изменением кислотности среды. Так как по мере приближения дня овуляции выделения из половых путей женщины становятся более щелочными. Если половой акт происходит накануне овуляции, то больше шансов для рождения мальчика, так как в этот момент реакция среды в организме женщины благоприятствует более быстрым Y-сперматозоидам.
Но если сношение происходит за 2-3 дня до овуляции, когда среда становится кислой, то в более благоприятных условиях оказываются выносливые Х-сперматозоиды. Высказываются также мнения, что яйцеклетка может "оказывать предпочтение" либо Х-, либо Y-сперматозоидам, пропуская одни и не пропуская другие. На этом основан еще один метод планирования пола ребенка, который рекомендует для зачатия мальчика иметь контакты за несколько дней до овуляции, а для зачатия девочки - непосредственно после овуляции. Есть и такие, которые считают, что планировать ребенка позже 24 часов после овуляции не стоит. Это объясняется "старением" яйцеклетки и увеличением вероятности выкидыша и врожденных дефектов.
Условием для применения того или иного из названных методов является очень точное определение момента овуляции, что затрудняет их практическое использование, а также проверку.
